Failure analysis of glass fiber reinforced epoxy resin via Digital volume correlation
The increasing use of fiber-reinforced polymers in major structural applications demands comprehensive analyses of damage mechanisms that induce their failure. With the recent advancements of imaging technologies and image- processing algorithms, the possibilities of early detection as well as the accurate prediction of damage and cracking processes have extended remarkably. In this regard, Computed Tomography coupled with Digital Volume Correlation enables the measurement of 3D displacement fields and strain maps in the bulk of investigated samples, thereby significantly contributing to the investigation of the complex behavior of such heterogeneous materials. The aim of this study is to perform a post-mortem analysis of a specimen made of a resin reinforced with a fiber mat. 3D displacement fields are measured employing FE- based DVC. The correlation residual fields (corresponding to voxelwise gray level differences at the convergence of the correlation procedure) are utilized to perform the mesh segmentation, which will ultimately result in more reliable descriptions of failure.
