Influence of methacrylate additives on low- temperature properties of mineral diesel and synthesized fatty acid methyl and octyl esters
Biofuels, e.g. biodiesels, as alternative energy sources, can be obtained via transesterification reaction from natural feedstock (vegetable oils or animal fats) and a selected alcohol, alongside a cataylst. Here, fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and fatty acid octyl esters (FAOCE) were synthesized using sunflower oil, corresponding alcohol (methanol and octanol) and potassium hydroxide, as an alkaline catalyst. Several application properties, i.e. density, viscosity, cold filter plugging point (CFPP) and pour point (PP), were determined using standardized tests. Due to poor low-temperature fuel properties, further experiments aimed towards the synthesis of methacrylate polymer additives and their influence on application properties of FAME, FAOCE and mineral diesel. Their thermal properties, purity and impact on the low- temperature properties were tested according to the methods EN 116 and ASTM D 5950. Preliminary results indicate that the synthesized additives reduce the cold filter plugging point (CFPP) of mineral diesel fuel up to 10 °C and the pour point (PP) up to 30 °C.
