Incidence of renal failure in neurosurgical and neurotraumatized patients
Acute renal failure (ARF) develops in about 5% of patients admitted to the ICU, and has a mortality rate of 60% (N= 29 269). Over a 5 year period, 3670 patients were admitted in NICU ( 3025 patients admitted after elective neurosurgery operations (82%) and 645 patients after traumatic brain injury (TBI), eg. 282 STBI. Only 6 of all of them needed renal replacemnt therapy. Acute renal failure in neurosurgical and neurotraumatized patients is rare (<1 %) mainly curable with Continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT).
