Occupational Therapy Students’ Attitudes and Social Distance Towards Persons with Mental Health Issues: Potential Areas for Building Student Resilience

Approximately 450 million people worldwide suffer from a mental health condition, making this a leading cause of illness and disability (WHO). However, research to date indicates that negative attitudes towards persons with mental health issues (MHI) continue to prevail and that these attitudes differ with respect to one’s formal education. This study aimed to examine occupational therapy (OT) students' attitudes and social distance towards persons with MHI and accordingly the preferences of OT students for working with people with MHI. The MICA-4 assessment was carried out with 150 Croatian OT students in all three years of study, together with the modified Bogardus Social Distance Scale. Results did not indicate high levels of stigmatizing attitudes among students, while the degree of social distance towards persons with mental illness was moderate. However, content analysis of expressed attitudes demonstrates that some stigmatizing attitudes remain and greater social distance was visible towards specific groups and in certain situations. Only 23.2% of students expressed an interest in working in the field of mental health, and this interest declined in later years of study. There is still potential for improving students’ sensitization towards persons with MHI and, as such, building resilience for this field of work.
