Physical and Chemical Properties of Alcohols and Diesel/Alcohol Blends
Crude oil industries are more focused on the topics concerning biofuels and alternative fuels due to the regulatory and societal pressures. The EU goal is to have net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. The aim is to reduce emissions in transport by 90% by 2050. CO2 from fossil fuels increases global warming, while NOx emissions lead to ground level ozone formation. Use of biofuels will result in lower CO2, SO2 and NOx emissions. Biofuels are an environmentally friendly and sustainable source of energy. Alcohols can be produced by fermentation process from biomass (lignocellulose) and are considered fully renewable biofuel. Blending alcohols in certain amounts with fossil diesel fuel can reduced regulated pollutant emissions such as particulate matters (PM), carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides (NOx). In this work we analyzed physical and chemical properties of different alcohols, which can be produced by bioprocesses, and their corresponding blends with fossil diesel fuel. Blends with propanol, butanol, isobutanol, pentanol, hexanol, octanol and dodecanol with fossil diesel were prepared in range from 0 up to 30 vol %. Obtained blend properties were compared to the HRN EN 590 standard requirements and suitability for use was assessed.
