Synthesis and Characteristics of Alternative Biodiesels and Diesel Blends
Renewable liquid biofuels are considered a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels and can be used as pure biofuel or more often as blends with fossil fuels, to certain extent. The industry is increasingly adopting new bioprocesses for production of (higher) alcohols. Some of them can be directly used as fuels and some of them can be further modified to accommodate current motor engines. Transesterification is one of those modifications and using this method we produced alternative biodiesels from different alcohols. In this lecture example of implementing the response surface methodology (RSM) for obtaining an empirical mathematical model for biodiesel synthesis reaction will be presented. In this set of experiments, design of experiments (DoE) approach is used and temperature, time, catalyst content and oil to alcohol ratio were varied as crucial parameters. Furthermore, the obtained alternative biodiesels were mixed with mineral diesel and the blends were characterised.
