Application of novel thermochemical methods for enhanced synthesis of alternative fuels in the period of energy transition
Climate change and global warming are two global challenges, that require rapid and comprehensive solutions that can reduce their devastating impacts. As there is scientific evidence that human activities and especially anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are responsible for these two global effects, deep decarbonization of the energy system is an imperative. Energy transition of today’s fossil-fuel based power, industry, heating and transport sector, to a renewable energy source based energy system is underway. Transition and decarbonization of the whole energy system require the utilization of negative-emission and novel fuel conversion technologies. This field of research has received increased attention over the past years with studies across the energy sector that investigated different engineering problems. This Special Issue is motivated by the four Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems Conferences held in 2020. The purpose of this review introduction article is to provide a brief introduction to the field and the articles included in this Special Issue.
