Croatian bioeconomy in the light of the EU bioeconomy strategy

The term bioeconomy has become mainstream in policy papers and strategies globally describing sustainable economy that reuses resources in order to decrease the need for either fossil or new resources. According to the European’s Commission Joint Research Center (JRC), bioeconomy is observed as economy through biomass production and conversion of biomass into value - added products such as food, feed, products from biomass and energy from biomass. The paper analyses Croatian bioeconomy sector in the light of the EU Bioeconomy Strategy that supports three key aspects such as development of new technologies and processes, market development and competitiveness in biomass-based sectors as well as encouragement of policy makers and stakeholders in cross-sectoral cooperation. The relevance of bioeconomy as a global strategy increases due to COVID 19 pandemic since the countries have been confronted by numerous economic and social challenges. The recovery after the COVID-19 crisis might represent an opportunity for transforming the economies into circular ones.
