Influence of the medieval legal monument Zakon Sudnyj Ljudem on the Vinodol Law and its legacy in the medieval Croatian legal system

The legal monument Zakon sudnyj ljudem, as the oldest known Slavic law in the world, was compiled probably in Bulgaria during the second half of the 9th century, with the purpose to fight paganism within newly baptised Bulgarian society. Since that time, its influence spread beyond borders of Bulgarian state to reach also the neighbouring country of Croatia. Although not having the full extent influence, Zakon sudnyj ljudem reached parts of Croatian society that, according to some ancient sources, were following its written codes of conduct. The Vinodol Law is considered as the best example of how Zakon sudnyj ljudem influenced Croatian society. The Vinodol Law is one of the most famous and well-known medieval legal codes in the world. As it has its roots in the old Croatian and old Slavic law, the Vinodol Law is inextricably linked to the first Slavic law - Zakon sudnyj ljudem.
