Dental and skeletal effects of early class III treatment

AIM: The aim was to analyse skeletal and dental effects following early class III treatment. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Pre-treatment and post- treatment lateral cephalograms of a total of 23 subjects (48% girls) submitted to early class III treatment (hyrax expander + face mask) were analysed. Analyses were performed in AudaxCeph software (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and included the following measurements: SNA, SNB, ANB, wits, skeletal profile (NAPog), SN:NL, NL:ML, Bjork's polygon, y-axis (NSGn), proclination of upper and lower incisors (U1:NL and L1:ML), protrusion of upper and lower incisors (U1:nA, L1:nB). T-test was used in statistical analysis. RESULTS: There was a tendency towards counterclockwise inclination of the maxilla and clockwise rotation of the mandible. Maxillary incisors were moved anteriorly (p<0.001) without the change in inclination. Mandibular incisors retroclined (p=0.011). No significant changes were observed in SNA, SNB, ANB, wits, skeletal profile, Bjork's polygon, and y-axis. CONCLUSION: Early class III treatment showed a tendency towards an increase of vertical dimension with an anterior shift of maxillary dentition and retroclination of mandibular incisors.
