The history of childhood in the west –deconstructing and shaping childhood narratives

In the paper, we consider the historical construct of childhood in the West and try to emphasize the erosion of the idea of childhood, which has slowly deconstructed the image of a child as a useful and cost-effective, to the image of a child as a useless, unprofitable but priceless object of our worship. The trend that is increasingly prevalent in the developed countries of the West is the new cultural ethos - the so-called infantilist ethos, the ethos of eternal adolescents, and induced childhood. The cult of the present moment and the ethos of narcissism are engulfing developed parts of the world. Modern infantilization is closely linked to the demands of consumerist capitalism in the global market economy. All this results in the dissolution of the idea of childhood and the value of the child itself, and a change in the discourse in defining the child. The expected scientific contribution of the paper goes towards the possibility of understanding how the dissolution of the idea of childhood in the West also affects our understanding of the child, his moral status, and the value he has for the society as a whole.
