OSCAR’S GREEN STORY – FUN AND EDUCATIONAL WAY TO PROMOTE RECYCLING AND PROCESSING OF WEEE

Our consumer society, in which almost everything goes through a "shelf life" because fashion or technology is changing, has led to the accumulation of waste of all kinds. The importance of recycling and waste treatment needs to be discussed with children from pre-school age, especially during primary school. Themes of sustainable development are included in the national curriculum (Croatia) and cover the entire work of the school and can be part of compulsory and elective subjects, but also various projects, fieldwork or extracurricular activities. The aim of these topics is to teach pupils on all issues related to sustainable development, including the issues of disposal and recycling and waste treatment, and it is aimed at directing them to think critically about the issue and encourage personal action. A picture book or comic can be an excellent media through which children will be passed on new knowledge, but also important messages about how to behave and what they can do to protect the environment, but also to influence their parents and so that everyone together realized the importance of recycling and waste treatment. Our Oscar’s green story on a fun-educational way deals with the current and important topic of recycling and processing of WEEE. It is written in the form of a comic strip, and with the combination of visual and textual elements, it aims to win over children's readers and realize its intention of teaching on the mentioned topic. The form of comics has continuity and popularity among audiences of different ages, from children, through young people to adult audiences, and in contemporary literature, comics have experienced affirmation. Today's children, who grow up influenced by visual and audiovisual culture, gladly accept picture books, comics or graphic novels. By using pictorial code and the brevity of expression, comics use the language and mode of communication that is common in modern communication, which is largely oriented towards visual media. In this way, the codes of comics are close to children, and by using the form of comics, the educational function of the work can be successfully achieved throughout the primary school age.
