Hematological parameters of marginated tortoise (Testudo marginata)
The complete blood count of tortoises and its correct interpretation gives an insight into the health condition of the individual, helps in making a diagnosis and determining and monitoring the effectiveness of therapy, which contributes to better protection of the health of these animals. The goal of this study was determination of some hematological parameters in marginated tortoise (Testudo marginata). Blood samples were taken from 16 animals from the Zagreb Zoo and processed at the Department of Pathophysiology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. The obtained results were compared with the literature reference values for this animal species. The blood analysis of the marginated tortoise showed deviations from the reference values of the red and white blood cell parameters. The cause of the deviation can be determined by more detailed hematological processing and determination of biochemical parameters in the blood, and thus distinguish whether the deviation is due to changes in animal health or the influence of external and /or internal factors on blood parameters.
