Transcribing Tacitly – Jerko Bezić’s School in Croatian Ethnomusicology
In Croatian ethnomusicology, the last influential method of transcribing was developed by Jerko Bezić. Although influential, his transcription knowledge can paradoxically also be considered tacit. Since Bezić developed his transcribing methodology for the needs of his own research, he rarely explained it verbally in his written works. Regardless of the fact that he also taught his methods of transcribing and analysing at the Zagreb Music Academy until 1993, they are no longer taught and his methods remain unreachable for younger generations of ethnomusicologists, as transcribing has ceased to be in the focus of contemporary ethnomusicology in the meantime. This paper will problematise the methodological knowledge of older generations of ethnomusicologists that fell into oblivion due to the shift in paradigm in (Croatian) ethnomusicology. It will also bring forward the written works by Jerko Bezić and his students that deal with his methodology of transcribing and analysing in an attempt to verbalise and systematise this tacit methodological knowledge.
