Cybercrime

The implementation of Information Technology has seen the rise of both cyber dependent and cyber enabled crime. Cyber-dependent crimes (or ‘pure’ cyber crimes) can be offences that can be committed using a computer, computer networks or other form of information communications technology (ICT). These acts include the spread of viruses or other malware or ransomware, hacking and distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. They are activities primarily directed against computers or network resources, although there may be a variety of secondary outcomes from the attacks. For example, data gathered by hacking into an email account may subsequently be used to commit a fraud, while cyber-enabled crimes are traditional crimes that are increased in scale or reach by the use of computers, computer networks or other ICT. Unlike cyber- dependent crimes, they can still be committed without the use of ICT. Examples can include fraud (including phishing and other online scams), theft, and sexual offending against children. This has involved the police using new skills to detect cybercrime and a greater use of surveillance in the virtual world of the internet and social networking. Cybercrime has become the new volume crime. All police forces have had to respond on a regional, national and international capacity. Crime no longer stops at the force boundary.
