Erosion Corrosion of Heat Treated and Boronised Steels
In oil and gas exploration and production systems the essential parts of steel equipment are exposed to severe erosive / corrosive conditions in various fluids, e.g. in formation water containing chlorides with suspended hard particles like quartz or silicate sand. Carbon steels and low alloy steels are insufficiently resistant under such circumstances that stimulate the attempts to slow down the erosion / corrosion wear of steels by heat treatment or by formation of diffusion layers of carbides, nitrides, borides etc [1-5]. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of heat treatment and of boronising on the behaviour of two carbon steels and two alloy steels in an NaCl / SiO2 / H2O suspension which is similar to fluids often encountered in oil and gas wells. Steel specimens were exposed to pure corrosion and to erosion corrosion in untreated (normalised) state, in heat treated state and in boronised state in order to obtain better insight into the effect of structural transformations and of boride layers on the wear behaviour of steels.
