S U M M A R Y The book Steel Structures is the natural consequence of the teaching programme on Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb for subject Structural Systems III on purpose to prepare the students of architecture for the examination on the part of this subject concerning structural steel design, as well as for the instruction carried out through workshop exercises. The general assignment of Steel Structures deals with the basic principles of steel structural design, the way of defining various structural systems and their necessary elements for its global and local stability. The teaching project for lectures on Structural Systems III is the writer suggestion to the simple approach for the design of steel structures which students of architectures needs during studies and latter in their professional work. For this purpose the steel design, which is difficult to be covered properly in texts with drawings and without adequate mathematical equations, is presented in book Steel Structures in a form, which from trial use of material may be successful. The book Steel Structures is in nineteen parts. Part One “ Historical development of steel constructions” consists from the buildings in the 19th and 20th centuries. A list of many steel structures are given which contributed to the source material for various structural systems and modern usage of steel. The grid light structures in steel are pointed out in modern architecture. Part Two and Three “ General aspects on the properties of steel structures” and “ Manufacturing process of steel and its mechanical properties” , deal with all aspects of the properties of steel and steel structures and its fundamental characteristics, including the review of anti-corrosion measures, fire protection and the full range of passive and active protection systems. The current techniques of processing steel and mechanical properties with stress-strain diagrams affected by carbon content in steel are described. Part Four “ The forming processes for various section types of steel elements in our standard specifications” . The production of steel elements by several different processes depending upon section types, size and steel qualities are carried out in relation to our specified standards. Part Five “ Design philosophies and the types of steel structural systems” is concerning the necessities that affect the design process of the steel structures for a consistent and rational approach. The architectural design for structural steel and its categories are selected and tabulated with the explanation of the basic theory for plane and space structures. Part Six “ Mechanical properties and structural behaviour of the systems” outlines the basic concepts and methods of design procedures accepted by our standardization. Ultimate limit state and serviceability design are analysed and elastic and plastic strength and stability of structural steel elements are defined. The behaviour of structural joints are tabulated with its rotational capacity and drawn in diagrams. Part Seven “ New concept of the reliability of structures” . The uncertainties that affect the safety of a structure are generally defined as loading, material strength and structural behaviour. With enough data, which are available to define probability distributions for the load and strength, it is possible to calculate a probability of failure, which are usually found to be small. By new standardization of design procedures partial safety factors format are involved in the calculation of the structural steel elements. Part Eight “ Structural loading” defines the statistical meaning of various kinds of loads with its probability density functions drawn diagrams and especially the action of the environmental loads on structures. Part Nine “ Buckling of the compression members” introduces the basic concept of buckling with the problems of stability of compression members under axial forces using simple bending theory, Euler buckling theory, ideal and real elastic-plastic behaviour of materials. The strength of real compression members are defined by effects of imperfect geometry (such as initial out-of-straightness, eccentricity of applied loading) and effect of residual stresses, with effect of material other than ideal elastic-plastic behaviour. The reduction of strength caused by these effects in connexion with the slenderness ratio, determines the nature of behaviour of compression members defined by the buckling curves in Eurocode 3. Part Ten “ Structural design of multiply bay single storey steel buildings, concerns theory of framing with all necessary bracings for global stability of steel structures. The special chapter is explaining the lateral buckling of main structural girders with or without warping torsion. The others bracing systems are explained for the wind action on the structures with the various solution forms. The last chapter is dealing with examples of buildings from plane portal fame structures to multi-span space structures used for various purposes applying high technology.
