Impact of non-surgical periodontal therapy on oral health related quality of life in patients with periodontitis

Background & Aim: Periodontal diseases and therapeutic interventions like non-surgical periodontal therapy affect oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). The aim of this study was to estimate the influence of non-surgical periodontal therapy on an OHRQoL in patients with periodontitis. Methods: This study included 40 Croatian adults (15 male, 25 female), mean age 40.0 ± 13.1 years. Of the 40 participants, 40% had chronic periodontitis and 60% had aggressive periodontitis. Clinical periodontal parameters (API, PBI, PPD and REC) were measured, and a Croatian version of short form oral health impact profile (OHIP-CRO14) was administered at a baseline and 6–8 weeks after non-surgical periodontal therapy. With non-surgical periodontal therapy all participants received oral hygiene instructions. Statistical analysis were performed using the statistical software package SPSS 17.0 (SPSS, Chicago, IL, USA). Results: Data analysis showed that non-surgical periodontal therapy significantly improved OHRQoL. Median OHIP-CRO14 scores reduced from 19.8 baseline to 14.7 after therapy (p < 0.05). Improvements are significant in functional limitation, especially in sense of taste reduced from 2.0 baseline to 0.7 after therapy (p < 0.05). In the area of physical pain, painful aching reduced from 1.5 baseline to 0.6 after therapy, and uncomfortable eating reduced from 1.8 baseline to 1.1 after therapy (p < 0.05). Patients age, gender or periodontal status did not affect OHRQoL. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that non- surgical periodontal therapy improved OHRQoL in patients with periodontitis. Participants evaluated non- surgical periodontal therapy as a therapy with positive psychological influence. The quality of life was almost equally improved with both gender, with patients of different age and considering the periodontal status. However, longitudinal studies are needed to clarify the relationship between non-surgical periodontal therapy and OHRQoL.
