Surgical approach of wound management in reptiles
Wound healing in reptiles is a very complex evolutionary adaptation. Scar formation participate in re-forming the protective barrier with the external environment. Important difference between snakes and lizards in the process of healing is that the snakes form a significant epithelial scab, while lizards do not. Methods that are used in veterinary medicine for managing wounds in mammals are very similar for reptiles and they include primary closure, second intention healing and delayed primary closure. Most clinical cases of skin injuries are husbandry-related problems. The most common finding in captive reptiles are skin abscesses and abrasions. Other than skin abscesses and abrasions, traumatic wound, electric burns, chemical burns, thermal burns, lacerations, punctate wounds, ulceration and ulcerative dermatitis are not so uncommon presentations in clinical practice. Newer researches are advancing our knowledge and new possible approaches of wound management in reptiles. This review provides surgical approach of wound management and their healing process.
