Consequences of Improved Feeder Cost Modeling in Distribution Planning Methods
In this paper, electric distribution planning is addressed with an emphasis on detailed modeling for purposes of optimal planning. The key issue is related to the estimation of MV feeder investment costs using GIS data. Investigation of this matter was endorsed in order to enhance a tool named CADDiN for long-term planning of MV open-loop and link networks based on genetic algorithms. In order to estimate feeder costs with reasonable accuracy an adequate optimization model must be used tightly coupled with a proper data model in the GIS. An outline of the proposed framework for modeling feeder costs in a GIS is presented in this paper followed by a description of a suitable optimization technique. Special attention is given to applications and consequences of the improved modeling in regard to optimal long-term large-scale planning.
