Analysis of physical and optical properties of coated prints with fragranced microcapsules
Today, microcapsules are used in numerous fields of application, especially in medicine, agriculture, chemical, pharmaceutical, construction, food and printing/graphic industry etc. They are usually applied in the form of coatings on the surface of various substrate materials for decorative, protective or functional intent. Functional coatings with different scents can be made using fragranced microcapsules, which enable the production of value-added printed products. The activation of the fragranced microcapsules is accomplished by rubbing the surface of the applied functional coating (by a certain amount of pressure and shear force), under which microcapsules' shells break, releasing the encapsulated fragrance. This research aimed to investigate and determine how different concentrations of the applied fragranced microcapsules in the coated water- based varnish layer affected the physical and the optical properties of the offset prints. Conducted scanning electron microscopy and print quality analyses of the coated prints revealed that different concentrations of added fragranced microcapsules in the varnish significantly affected both physical and optical characteristics of the coated prints.
