Computed Tomography in Lizards

Reptiles are becoming more and more common as pets so the population of captive lizards is growing. The clinical examination of lizards often proves to be difficult so veterinarians have to rely on their knowledge of lizard physiology and common pathology. Advanced diagnostic imaging methods, such as computed tomography (CT) is still relatively new in reptile veterinary practice but has proven to be very helpful. Lizards are perfect candidates for CT imaging due to their low respiratory rate. Only a few lizard species need to be sedated due to the short scanning time but in general it is not even necessary. Main advantage of CT image compared to conventional radiography is related to image quality - overcoming superimpositions of structures, improving contrast of the image and measuring small differences in tissue contrast. CT scan offers a three-dimensional look into pathologies of skeletal, respiratory, gastrointestinal and urogenital tract. Indications for CT scan are extensive: bone fractures, joint luxation, suspicious metabolic bone disease, neoplasia, pneumonia or kidney stones. Incorrect nutrition and husbandry are quite common in captive lizards and can cause multiple problems affecting multiple organic systems and/or consequential injuries. Total body CT scan is indicated in such cases. CT scan can be used for tracking pregnancy or sexual cycle by assessing the number, size and position of follicles and eggs. After administrating the contrast, CT scan can also give a precise determination of the gender when sexual dimorphism is absent. In conclusion, the use of CT is constantly growing and veterinarians have to consider it as a fast and useful diagnostic imaging method.
