Ion broadening of sodium nS-3P transitions
Recent measurements of the shift and shape of sodium nS-3P atomic lines [1, 2] from high pressure sodium discharges have revealed the existence of a small but significant red asymmetry of all investigated atomic lines. The noticed red asymmetry of sodium atomic lines emitted from the discharge can be partially explained by foreign gas broadening by noble gas atoms or cadmium (mercury) atoms which are domimant species in the discharge. Simulation of the atomic line shape was performed coupling the Bartels method to calculate the intensity of the line emitted by the plasma [3] and the convolution of impact and quasistatic line profile to calculate the shape of the atomic line [2, 4].
