STRONTIUM AND MAGNESIUM COSUBSTITUTED HYDROXYAPATITE/WHITLOCKITE SCAFFOLDS SYNTHESIZED FROM CUTTLEFISH BONE

Strontium substituted and strontium- and magnesium-cosubstituted calcium phosphate highly porous scaffolds based on hydroxyapatite (HAp, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) were hydrothermally synthesized from aragonite cuttlefish bone. In situ addition of Sr2+ ion resulted in a total conversion of aragonite precursor to HAp. At maximal examined addition of strontium (10 mol.% Sr2+ instead of Ca2+) whitlockite (WH, Ca18MgxSry(HPO4)2(PO4)12) appeared with up to 2 mas.%. Strontium showed no effect on HAp unit cell parameters. In situ cosubstitution resulted with scaffolds which showed that Mg2+ ions have a significant effect on HAp/WH ratio and surface agglomerates size, while Sr2+ ions have a great influence on WH unite cell parameters. In vitro cell culture confirmed that scaffolds are not cytotoxic. Prepared cosubstituted carbonated HAp/WH scaffolds indicate to have great potential to be used as bone scaffolds where incorporation of Sr2+ and Mg2+ ions into crystallographic structure can improve biological response.
