Neuropathic trigeminal pain – a dental and a neurological/neuroradiological perspective
A prospective study of patients with orofacial pain was carried out at the Department of Removable Prosthodontics, where 264 patients were examined from January 2001 to May 2020 for clinical symptoms and signs of osteoarthritis of TMJ. Of these patients, 60 were analyzed for orofacial pain. They were previously neurologically examined due to unconfirmed suspicions of a neurological origin of orofacial pain. The study included 16 patients (group G-1, mean age 62±12 (median 65) years, 93, 7% female) with osteoarthritis of TMJ and a comorbidity with trigeminal neuralgia, and 44 patients (group G-2, mean age 53.7±14.1 (median 54) years, 83% female) with trigeminal neuralgia only. The group G-1 consisted of younger patients, with a statistically significant difference (p=0, 0193) compared to the G-2 group. Correct diagnosis is the key to managing facial pain of non-dental origin, which includes participation of several experts from the fields of dental medicine, neurology and neuroradiology.
