Interphase interval effect on the neural stimulation thresholds for several pseudomonophasic waveforms: a computational case study
This computational case study analyzed the neural stimulation thresholds for six different pseudomonophasic (charge-balanced) waveforms, using SENN nerve model. The results were analyzed in the form of threshold ratios, defined as the ratio of pseudo-monophasic to monophasic threshold, for the same cathodal pulse duration, ranging from 5 to 1000 μs. The results demonstrate a strong increase of the composite biphasic stimulus excitation threshold with respect to the threshold for the monophasic stimulus having the same cathodal phase duration, especially for the short pulses. However, the threshold increase depends on the anodal phase waveform and duration, and is alleviated by the introduction of the interphase interval.
