Factor structure of the short form of Social dominance orientation questionnaire (SDO7) on youth samples from multiple countries
Social dominance orientation represents a well- known and relevant concept in social psychology. This study focused on testing the psychometric properties of its relatively novel operationalization (SDO7 – short form, Ho et al., 2015) on a youth sample. Data on more than 15 thousand 16-17 years old high-school students from nine countries (Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Latvia, Croatia, Slovakia, Georgia, Turkey and India) used in this study were collected within the project CHIEF. Multiple plausible models were tested on the overall sample using confirmatory factor analysis, with the two-factor model with correlated residuals yielding the highest fit to data. However, factors of this model reflected the wording direction of items, not the originally developed factors related to social dominance and anti-egalitarianism. Furthermore, the model we obtained was tested using multi-group confirmatory factor analyses and achieved partial strong invariance, implying the consistency of obtained factor structure, loadings, and (at least some) intercepts across countries. Potential causes and implications of these findings are discussed.
