Dark personality and inequality in the prediction of radicalized intentions

Dark personality traits are often considered the cause of various socially undesirable and morally questionable behaviors, some of which may occur in the context of political behavior. However, actions in the political arena are usually motivated by external instead of internal factors, which often represent some sort of inequality or injustice. This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that intraindividual and intergroup factors interactively predict radicalized intentions. Multiple operationalizations of socio-political and economic inequality were included, along with a scale that measures social desirability bias, to obtain robust findings. Based on a quota sample (representative with respect to age and gender), results exhibited a consistent relationship between the composite dark personality traits and support for radicalized intentions, with and without exclusion of activist intentions. On the other hand, different forms of inequality exhibited a relationship with radicalized intentions only when the variance of activist intentions was not extracted from radicalized intentions, implying that different forms of inequality may lead to non-violent, but are unrelated to violent intentions. The one exception was the emotional component of fraternalistic relative deprivation, which was operationalized through anger-like emotions and predicted radicalized intentions regardless of activist intentions. This was the only operationalization of inequality which predicted radicalized intentions interactively with the dark composite trait, implying that darker personalities, when angered by injustice, represent serious candidates for the development of radicalized ideation.
