The Relationship between Multicultural Experience and Students’ Attitudes toward Equal Rights for Immigrants: A Cross-National Comparison of Nine European and Asian Countries
Research to date has shown that greater participation in multicultural activities could have the effect of reducing prejudice against different cultures. In case this assumption is correct, the correlation between multicultural experience and intergroup attitudes should be positive. The current research was carried out within the EU Horizon 2020 CHIEF project, which involved the participation of nine countries from Europe and Asia. In each country, a survey was conducted on approximately 2, 000 high school students with the modal age of 16 years, from around thirty schools stratified according to the level of urbanization. Furthermore, within each locality, schools were chosen to reflect diversity in other country relevant variables, such as the SES, ethnic makeup school type, and others. The whole sample thus comprised around 18, 000 students from nine countries. Each student completed an online or paper-based survey that included, among other questions a scale of participation in multicultural activities and the attitudes toward equal rights for immigrants. To address the question of the relationship between the amount of multicultural experience and the students’ attitudes towards immigrant rights, taking into account the possible clustering effect of schools, we applied multilevel analysis. We discuss obtained results both in general and in the light of the existing cross-national differences.
