In regard to Lee et al

We read with interest the recent study by Lee et al. The authors examined the effect of radiation therapy (RT) in 9 patients with progressive posttraumatic heterotopic ossification (HO).1 They reported reduction of HO formations coupled with reduced pain and improved ambulatory status in majority of patients treated with hypofractionated RT. This could potentially shed light on the difference in radiation and fractionation sensitivity between these 2 mainstays of HO because our experience demonstrates that extremely low doses (biologically equivalent dose 3 <5 Gy), contrary to the theory of mesenchymal stem cell radioresistance, 7 yielded lasting therapeutic effect.
