Alternative Shellfish Species for Aquaculture in Future Climate Change Conditions
People worldwide depend on fisheries and aquaculture for food, essential nutrients and livelihoods. The sector is already under stress from overfishing, habitat degradation, harmful practices and climate climate change conditions. Changes in environmental parameters, such as an increase in sea temperature, a decrease in freshwater inflows, an increase in salinity and the acidification of the sea, will have a markedly negative impact on shellfish farming, changing shellfish growth and increasing mortality. Therefore, policymakers and citizens need to recognize the need for sustainable growth, define new aquaculture areas and propose alternative and adaptable shellfish species to climate change conditions.
