Level of (s)Fas in cerebrospinal fluid in patients with multiple sclerosis
The aim of the study was to assess the possible involvement of apoptosis in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS) by measuring the level of soluble (s)Fas/APO-1 (antiapoptotic marker) in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of MS patients. This pilot case-control study included 12 patients with MS (mean age 40+-6 years) and 12 patients with other neurologic symptoms such as cephalea or vertigo (mean age 41+-6 years) as a control group. In the MS group, there were 8 patients with relapsing-remitting and 4 with secondary progressive MS. Patients with a history of other autoimmune, malignant or severe infectious diseases were not included in the study. The clinical status of MS patients was assessed by EDSS. The level of s-Fas in CSF samples was determined by ELISA. Results were expressed as mean+-standard deviation. Between-group differences were determined by t-test. Values of p<O.O5 were considered statistically significant. The level of soluble (s)Fas/APO-1 was lower in MS patients than in the control group (258+-71 VB. 315+-33 pg/ml, p=O.O2). Study results suggested the possible contribution of apoptosis to the pathogenesis of MS.
