The Heat Treatment of Aluminium Foam Precursors
In this paper, the influence of heat treatment of aluminium foam precursor on the results of specific energy absorption was investigated. This method is oriented to modifying the precursor microstructure with the goal of improving energy absorption property. Used heat treatment was below the solidus temperature of the alloy and it has been tested in AlMgSi0.6 (0.4 wt. % TiH2) commercial precursors from AluLight International GmbH (Ranshofen, Austria). Samples were manufactured by gas releasing particles in a semi- solid state. To examine the effect of the heat treatment of the precursors on specific energy absorption, quasi-static uniaxial compression tests were carried out, with a constant compression rate of 60 mm/min. From the tested results, the energy absorption per unit volume was calculated. The results showed that the heat treatment of precursors generally improved specific energy absorption and flattened the plateau part of stress-strain curves, compared to samples made from precursors that have not undergone heat treatment.
