Shake-table Study on the Effectiveness of Several Low-Cost Seismic Base Isolations

The use of low-cost seismic base isolation in the construction of some types of buildings in less developed countries is extensively investigated [1, 2]. This paper presents the results of a shake- table study on the effectiveness of low-cost base isolations for buildings seismic protection. Aseismic layers are formed of stone pebbles [1, 2], with combination of different additional elements to reduce layer shear stiffness. PP geogrids were used as supplementary elements, with different number and position of geogrid in height of the layer. Also, the HDPE geomembrane above the thin layer of sand on top of the layer of pebbles was used. A total of 11 different aseismic layers was tested, of which nine with hp = 0.3 m pebble layer and two with hp = 0.6 m pebble layer. The building is approximated by a rigid model (concrete block). The samples were exposed to horizontal base accelerations of four different accelerograms. The composite aseismic layers further reduced the acceleration (seismic force and strain / stress) of the building model, compared to the aseismic layer from only stone pebbles. Efficiency relationships between tested composite low-cost seismic base isolations were also compared and commented.
