The International Scientific Project Higher Education of Journalists in a Digital Environment (HEJDE)

The journalism education research domain mostly lacks applied and empirical research (Machado and Teixeira, 2016) as well as easily accessible, usable and understandable presentation of results for the academic, professional and general public. Some of those voids will be filled by the realisation of the project Higher Education of Journalists in a Digital Environment which is an institutional project of an international character, lasts for three years (2021 – 2023), and it is financed by the Faculty of Interdisciplinary, Italian and Cultural Studies of the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula, Croatia. An interdisciplinary approach was used ; besides communication sciences, information and software engineering, library science and filmology will be applied to collect and process data, and to edit various applied digital repositories and tools, some for personal, some for public use. This project’s main goal is to determine the condition, challenges and opportunities of the education of journalists in the digital environment from numerous different perspectives through four key project activities which will be carried out simultaneously. Firstly, there is a very large number of higher education study programmes in Europe that educate journalists, but there is no central place where one can access updated and important information fast and easily. Therefore, after gathering data, a publicly accessible interactive digital map regarding geographical, institutional and programme characteristics will be designed for future students, professionals and the wider public. The intention is to, as part of that digital tool, enable the simple and controlled uploading of new data. Hence, we invite scientists and experts to join us and provide information about institutions and study programmes that educate journalists in their own European countries. Secondly, since online study programmes are a worldwide trend, there is a necessity to determine if there is, from an academic and market perspective, a need/or an opportunity to create a first online journalism study programme in Croatia which could be used by all interested parties from former Yugoslav states. The potential programme features, possibilities for its realisation, sustainability methods and challenges will be investigated. Further, within this project, a thematic digital library dealing with the education of journalists will be created. Moreover, one of the aims is to determine via the e-catalogue of the National and University Library in Zagreb what are the editorially designed publications of Croatian authors in the Croatian language published in Croatia in the period between 1990 and 2020 which could be used for teaching needs at Croatian higher education institutions that educate journalists. Last but not least, films are traditionally used as a didactic teaching tool at all levels of education, so it has been assumed that journalism could also be adequately taught in that way. Those that somehow deal with and present the topic of journalism will be researched as didactic teaching tools and selected. Chosen films will be available within a digital base, accessed upon request, with appertaining methodical materials for university teachers. These are all original project activities whose topics have still not been researched on either the domestic or international level.
