A Contribution to the Research of Intellectual Ties between Croatia and Slovakia. Analysis of Books from Slovakian Printing Houses in Zagreb’s Bibliotheca Metropolitana

The paper aims at illustrating one of the aspects of intellectual ties between Croatia and Slovakia through the analysis of 18th-century library holdings of the Library of Zagreb Archdiocese, Bibliotheca Metropolitana, and Slovakian printing centres, mainly Trnava as a Jesuit and university seat, but also Bratislava and Košice. Connections and influences exchanged between the Zagreb chapter, its bishops and university with University of Trnava (founded in 1635) as the most important higher education institution in the historical Hungarian lands with numerous students from Croatia, had a great impact on the cultural and intellectual development of north- west Croatia. The analysis encompassed 2031 titles from the Bibliotheca Metropolitana, with 69 books from Trnava, 38 from Bratislava and 5 from Košice. The Trnava university printing house, Typis Academicis Societatis Jesu Tyrnaviae, published university textbooks in theology, history and law, but a considerable number of titles belong to a surprisingly wide array of cultural topics, especially literature. Bratislava editions include fewer titles in theology, with emphasis on history, law, poetry and several titles in geography. Interesting titles include F. Babai’s history of Hungarian kings, J.-B. Lignel Bossuet’s discourses on Protestantism, Augustin Calmet’s books on the Bible, and from Bratislava works by M. Bél, the founder of Slovak geography. This paper presents important connections of Slovakia’s educational and cultural centres with Croatia, particularly Zagreb, the impact and extent of which remain to be explored.
