The Relationship between Personality Traits, Emotional Intelligence and School Success

The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of personality traits and emotional intelligence on school success. The study was conducted among 260 students (58 men and 202 women) in the fourth class of two high schools in the southern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire (16PFQue) was used to determine personality traits and a Trait Emotional Intelligence Questionnaire (TEIQue) was used to measure emotional intelligence. Anxiety and self- sufficiency were found to be the most common traits among students. Tough-mindedness was significantly more evident in the group of students with an average grade of “excellent” in comparison to the students with an average grade of “good”. Sensitivity and tension were significantly more present among the students with an average grade of “good” in comparison to the students with an average grade of “excellent”. Tough-mindedness positively correlated, whilst anxiety, liveliness, sensitivity, apprehension, openness to change and tension negatively correlated with school success. There was no significant difference in emotional intelligence between the groups of students. According to our results, certain personality traits may have a significant influence, whilst the level of emotional intelligence has no impact on school success.
