Urine and plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in patients with glomerular diseases
IL-6 is involved in the induction of acute phase protein synthesis in liver cells, as well as in other systemic changes associated with infection and tissue injury. IL-6 is probably produced by mesangial cells in patients with mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis (MPG). The aim of this study was to determine IL-6 levels in urine amd plasma patients with MPG and urosepsis (US). Plasma and urine IL-6 levels were determined using sensitive bioassays. Mesurable quantities of IL-6 were detected in urine mean SEM=24.75 +- 0.61 pg/ml, n=11 as well as the plasma 14.18+-0.43 pg/ml, n=10 of healthy controls. Increased urine IL-6 levels were found in patients with MPG (29.75+-0.78, n=12 ; p<0.01), while in patients with US the IL-6 concentration did not differ from the control values (25.24+-1.4, n=8, p>0.05). Il-6 is detectable in the plasma of 10 healthy subjects (14.18+-0.43 pg/ml ; range 12.4-16.8 pg/ml). In patients with MPG, IL-6 plasma levels were increased (>16.8 pg/ml) in 2 of 12, with the average value not significantly differenet from healthy controls. Increased IL-6 plasma concentrations were found in 2 of 8 patients with US. The data show that the presence of IL-6 in urine but not in palsma may be valuable indication of the disease in the majoritiy of patients with MPG.
