The moderating role of masculinity on the relationship between sexual partner satisfaction and overall sexual functioning

Objective: Different aspects of sexuality can be influenced by gender roles. This study examines if gender roles moderate the positive relationship between sexual partner satisfaction and overall sexual functioning in men and women concerning their religiosity. Design and Method: Participants were 676 individuals, 573 women and 103 men. The subjects were collected by using social networks. Among the participants, 273 women and 37 men identified themselves as religious, the rest as non-religious. An online questionnaire consisting of sociodemographic data, Sexual functioning scale and Bem's gender role inventory was administered. For the examination of moderating effects of gender roles, a simple moderated regression was used. Results: The results of the analysis suggest that the positive relationship between sexual partner satisfaction and overall sexual functioning is moderated by the level of masculinity. However, differences were observed concerning the gender and religiosity of the participants. The moderating effect of masculinity was confirmed in non-religious men and women only. Femininity was not a significant moderator of said relationship in neither of the subgroups. Conclusions: In accordance with the evolutionary theory, lower levels of masculinity strengthen the positive correlation between sexual partner satisfaction and overall sexual functioning. However, this is only true for individuals who consider themselves to be non-religious. This is in accordance with the well-known fact that people, especially women, who are highly religious have lower sexual functioning.
