European comparative research project Schools@Concerts: Experiences from Croatia and Macedonia

The comparative research project Schools@Concerts: tuning up for the music experience tends to find, examine, analyse and compare the youth getting in touch with classical music in different countries that reveals cultural, national and individual varieties. The participants are from Austria, Croatia, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Ireland, Macedonia, Poland and Serbia. In the multiple case study the different single cases will be implemented, with a comparative approach. In every single project the same selection criterion is applied: co¬operation between schools and concert hosts, typical concerts, national proj¬ects with tradition (more than 5 years), one group of pupils from age 9/10 to 14/15, attending a symphonic concert. The results from two single cases will be shown: from Croatia and Macedonia. The project takes a look into the aims, expectations and experiences of the participating parties as well as into the preparation process and the follow up activities. The data is collected through interviews and questionnaires on a pre-post setup using validated constructs (musical self- concept, STOMP) as well as open questions. Although in Croatia and Macedonia pupils expressed their satisfaction by visiting classical music concerts, the results show less differences in the pupils’ musical experience, in the approach of preparing the pupils for the concert, but also the fact that visits to such events are part of the Macedonian music curriculum, which is not the case in Croatia.
