"What stuff is here?": Edmond Malone and the 1778 Edition of Beaumont and Fletcher
The essay discusses the significance of Edmond Malone’s manuscript marginalia found in his copy of the ten-volume edition of The Dramatick Works of Beaumont and Fletcher, published in London in 1778. We first provide an account of the provenance of the volumes under discussion, previously unavailable for scholarly study ; we then offer a fresh perspective on the editing of Beaumont of Fletcher in the eighteenth century ; and, finally, we show the interest and importance of Malone’s manuscript notes for the study of early modern drama and as well as for current editorial practice. Particular attention is paid to Malone’s references to the office book of Sir Henry Herbert and to the manuscript playbook The Honest Man’s Fortune. The essay makes clear the need for a full modern commentary on the plays in the Beaumont and Fletcher canon.
