(Old) Church Slavonic compounds in the Romanian language of the 16th and 17th century
The paper presents the results of analysis of compounds borrowed from Old Church Slavonic and Church Slavonic into the Romanian language of the 16th and 17th centuries. A source for the research was the dictionary in Oczko (2014). The found compounds were compared to their equivalents in existing (Old) Church Slavonic corpora. Several types of compounds were identified: loanwords from Greek, mediated by (Old) Church Slavonic ; compounds identical (or almost identical) to their (Old) Church Slavonic models ; morphologically adapted compounds ; Romanian attestations of lexemes that are not attested elsewhere in (Old) Church Slavonic ; calques based on Old Church Slavonic models. Among Church Slavonic phonetic features, the majority are Bulgarian. The morphological adaptation implies change of form, gender or word category, and further derivation from complex bases with Romanian suffixes.
