Fading Humanity and Myth-making: Scheming the Clandestine in Gomorrah by Matteo Garrone
The paper focuses on the reinterpretation of myth and images of the clandestine in the bloodthirsty crime milieu of Naples, a meta-world governed by challenging, yet doubtful social postulates and violent protagonists who are attempting to assert control over human trafficking, rackets, and drug-dealing in the area, as seen through the film camera of Matteo Garrone. The fascination of young locals for the clandestine world, and the glorification of the complex life of the wretched, secret society and its bosses, keeps contributing to myth-making and leads to scenes of a dystopic society almost populated by the living dead who are aware that by their commitment to crime, they will soon lose either their lives or their freedom. At the same time, moments of myth-breaking are present, through the introduction of some new leitmotivs, such as images of Chinese garment workers or the African immigrant community. Garrone creates a process («cinematic myththinking», Irvin Singer), able to combine the reception of a film with the «philosophical scope» ; or rather the combination of aesthetic and technological elements like camera, sound, visual effects, and myth in order to fuse them into scenarios that include mythic elements.
