Encounters in the New World: Jesuit Cartography of the Americas
The book deals with the analysis of maps produced by the Jesuits during their missionary work in the possessions of the Spanish, Portuguese, and French Crowns in both North and South Americas. The research traces the Jesuit contribution to mapping and mapmaking from their arrival in the New World until their suppression. It further follows their cartographic work in the post-suppression period, when the Jesuits continued their work in exile. Based on a comparative analysis of numerous Jesuit maps of Spanish, French, and Portuguese provenances, book discuss what the Jesuit cartography of the Americas was, in which contexts (imperial and local) it developed, what its key characteristics were, and what impact Jesuit maps had on the development of the history of cartography in general. Particular attention is paid to the exchange of geographical knowledge with the native nations and their contribution to Jesuit mapmaking in the age of early modern encounter.
