The influence of B2O3 on the crystallization kinetics in zinc-aluminosilicate glasses
The influence of B2O3 on crystallization mechanism and on nucleation and growth parameters of gahnite in ZnO-Al2O3-SiO2 glasses, containing TiO2 as nucleating agents, was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the glasses without B2O3, the crystallization of gahnite (ZnAl2O4) is preceded by formation of metastable zinc-petalite (Zn0.5Al1.2Si1.8O6), which later decomposes into beta-quartz solid solution. By adding B2O3, the crystallization of gahnite as the main phase is shifted to lower temperatures. The overlapping of nucleation and crystallization has been reflected on the activation energy obtained using Kissinger equation.
