Meaningful remembrance: making artscapes of socialist city and deindustrialized world

In this paper, we use the Croatian town of Sisak to discuss artscapes created by a group of Sisak- born artists who in their work address urban decline and deindustrialization of their hometown in the aftermath of political changes during 1990’s. Once recognised for being the heartland of the biggest steelwork manufacturing industry in socialist Croatia, in the last thirty years the town of Sisak has become a poster socialist ghost town straggling with the demise of industry, and urban utopianism . Here we suggest that the image of post-socialist and post-industrial town of Sisak has become an emblematic artistic case study of the collapse of socialism and its modernist achievements. In this presentation we will discuss the structural impact of deindustrialization as an echo of political, economic and social change. In dedicating their art-work to the city of Sisak, a work by a group of artists that consists of conceptual artists Marijan Crtalić and Marko Tadić and film-maker Goran Dević will be evoked to explore “speculative views”, imaginations of the “pastfutures”, and the nostalgia of industrial ruins. A concept of meaningful remembrance will be used to explore the activity of creating artscapes that engage, comment, and deliberate on the intricate relationship of the socialist industrialization, modernization and the emerging futures of one particular socialist town-that-is- not-any-more.
