Study on mechanical and durability properties of concrete with RTPF after high temperature exposure

This paper presents the results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the effect of recycled tyre polymer fibres (RTPF) on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete after high temperature exposure as an alternative to polypropylene fibres (PPF) for spalling mitigation. For this purpose, three different concrete mixes were tested: conventional concrete without fibres and two mixes with 2 kg/m3 of RTPF and PPF respectively. After one year of curing, the specimens were tested under ambient conditions and after exposure to a predefined elevated temperature of up to 500°C with respect to compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, UPV and water absorption. The results obtained in this study lead to the important conclusion that the addition of RTPFs in an amount of 2 kg/m3 can be used as a substitute for PPF to prevent explosive spalling in heated concrete, but without further degradation of the mechanical and durability properties that may be caused by their melting.
