Effluent plume modeling in coastal waters - mathematical vs. hydraulic model
The sea has for all time been the ultimate sink for water-borne waste products coming from the land. This effluent, which is a dilute mixture of human and other wastes from urban and industrial communities has been disposed of into the sea, often without knowing precisely its eventual fate. However, rapid growth of coastal communities in the last century caused the wastewater load to increase to a degree that has attracted scientists to investigate in more detail the transport mechanisms that occur in natural water bodies. The aim of this paper is to present comparison between results obtained by hydraulic and mathematical modeling of Stobrec (Southern Croatia) outfall operation in hydrodynamic conditions characterized by stable longshore current with onshore component in the Brac channel. Particular attention has been paid to dispersion coefficients analysis and comparison between literature data and respective values determined on the basis of performed modeling work.
