Anthropological Analysis of the Late Roman/Early Medieval Cemetery of Novigrad (Istria)
Human skeletal remains of 13 individuals from Late Roman/Early Medieval cemetery of Novigrad (Istria) are compared with four contemporary Late Roman populations in continental Croatia. The 12 recovered burials from Novigrad are part of a bigger, destroyed cemetery, for which terminus post quem was established archaeologically as 5th or 6th century A.D. Four skeletal series from continental Croatia were recovered from Štrbinci (Certisa), Vinkovci (Cibalae), Osijek (Mursa) and Zmajevac, located in the eastern part of continental Croatia and dated to the 4th A.D. Paleodemographic analysis shows unusually high proportion of subadults in Novigrad sample, a life span range of women slightly lower comparing to contemporary populations. Subadult stress, evidenced by the presence of cribra orbitalia is higher in Novigrad serie than in compared ones. Skeletal evidence of physical stress suggests that several of the analyzed individuals were exposed to heavy physical labor during their adulthood.
