Terrorism, Migration, Border Security and Fundamental Rights
The breakthrough year in the new European history is in 2015 when Europe hit the largest wave of refuge after the Second World War. The EU initially approached the problem with the so- called “open” doors. However, with the political changes in individual member states, the gateway to nationalism and populism has slowly begun to turn into closed door policy. This has caused far- reaching consequences for the EU, such as stricter border controls and border closures (the so-called temporary suicide of Schengen) and an increase in fear and tension among citizens. Though not a direct security threat, the biggest challenge of uncoordinated migration, particularly irregular migration, is the alleged linkage of migrants to terrorist organizations, and hence the growing emergence of xenophobia (especially Islamophobia), hate crime and hate speech. The aim of this paper is to explore how the migration crisis influenced the rise of terrorism, hate crime and hate speech in the EU.
